If you follow a few simple steps, you can save money on energy costs and keep your pool or spas cozy and warm throughout colder weather temperatures. Instructions Light the pilot light found inside the heater door. Turn the switch on then off. Now you will need to wait at least five minutes before lighting the pilot light. This will ensure there is not any type of gas build up. You need to push in the gas valve knob and what is referred to as the "Safelight Matchless Lighter Igniter" at the same time. This will only take about 30 seconds. You can ensure the pilot is lit from the reflection in the mirror located underneath it. Set your thermostat to a safe temperature. According to the American Red Cross and the National Spa and Pool Institute, 78 degrees Fahrenheit is the recommended pool water temperature. To do this, you need to start the heater pump and then set the thermostat to the desired setting. You then need to lock the "Temp-lok" function, which will maintain a constant temperature in your pool or spa. Keep the water temperature at a comfortable level. Heat Transfer To understand how a central air conditioner and its heat exchanger work, it is helpful to understand a little about the laws that govern heat and heat transfer. Heat is essentially energy possessed by atoms. While atoms need a certain amount of energy to stay together, they can also hold and release extra energy. The more energy an atom holds, the more it will vibrate, causing other atoms to vibrate and making molecular structures move faster. This movement, which means increased energy, is what you think of as heat. According to the laws of thermodynamics, heat is always trying to achieve an equilibrium, moving from a warmer area to a cooler area to try and make them both the same temperature. This means that when warm air comes into contact with cold metal, some energy in the air will pass into the metal, making the air cooler and the metal warmer. Cooling Process This process governs how central air conditioners work. An air conditioner takes air from rooms throughout the house and sends processed air back through the ducts, but most work is done outside and at the central air conditioner's heat exchange system. This system is similar to that of a refrigerator, except that it can both heat and cool air. It uses a heat-reactive refrigerant that can be expanded into a gas and condensed into a liquid to make it absorb and release heat. This refrigerant typically starts out as a liquid without much energy--the molecules are vibrating too slowly for it to become a gas. The liquid is sent through an expansion device and an evaporator coil that draws in warmth from the surrounding air and sends it into the liquid, giving it more energy and changing it into a gas. This gas is then highly compressed, which makes it hot, and the heat that it absorbs is all drawn from air as it passes through the conditioning system. This results in cooler air but a hot gas.
